Brake Fluid

What is brake fluid?

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that transmits foot pressure on the pedal down a pipe to apply pressure to the brakes themselves. The main characteristic of hydraulic fluid is that it does not compress so it transfers the full force to the other end of the pipe.

Does brake fluid deteriorate?

Most people do not realise it but brake fluid does deteriorate over time as it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. This reduces the brake fluids boiling point and air bubbles can form. This results in reduced braking efficiency and a spongy brake pedal feel. Moisture can also cause corrosion and eventual failure of the braking system.

At first the reduced efficiency will only be a problem in emergencies or under heavy braking but eventually it will be noticeable under normal braking too. Obviously we need to be able to rely on our brakes at all times so it is a good idea to replace the fluid before the brakes fail!

How often should I change my brake fluid?

Tyrrell Autos recommends that the fluid is replaced every two years or so regardless of how many miles the vehicle has or has not done in that time. This even applies to very low mileage cars doing only a few miles a year! Manufacturer’s recommendations vary though and are normally shown in the vehicles Service Book.
